Instead of assuming there is a harmony of interest in countries, reality is that it doesn"t exist and there is also an idea of anarchy (no higher authority for self-preservation) countries should build up power on their own. Including helping other states: there is power that is not only military which makes waltz dated (china building free infrastructure in african countries, cold war, idea of relative power (nuclear warheads) No one can stop them: cooperation is may be essential to survival at times, but it is always fragile, rise of china, us and military force, ukraine, russia, putin; nato, eu and brexit, north korea and nuclear weapons. Ir great debates - 1: link between theory and what"s taking place, second: broad social sciences debate, how do we try to understand what"s happening around us, structuralist debate- understanding the structure of the world, capitalism, realism etc.
