The rise of minor (3rd) parties and challenges to the 2 party system. Group of people united in opinion and action. Have same general opinion of what should be done and how. Exercise political power: organize government, government is the party that wins the most seats in the election: a large part of government authority arises from political parties. Structure the vote: voters are voting for combination for individual candidate and party they belong to. Socialization and participation: parties create link between citizens in political system: voting, and also get involved. Selection: recruit political personnel, nurture future generations of politicians: parties select members to run for election. Articulate and aggregate social interests: what kinds of things are important to people, and aggregate on some kind of platform to present, what the public wants, and demands of social groups on political system. Legitimation: link citizens and state: anchoring political order in minds of citizen.
