Arrival of political parties around mid 19th century will bring important metamorphosis to representative government. Parties created to respond to the widening of the right to vote, the need to organize/neutralize. Seek to acquire and obtain political power - main objective of political parties. Partisanship and partisan politics can be detrimental to political health of a community - problematic nature of political parties in a democratic context. Whereas representative government looked towards wealthy noble, political party system looks towards the exemplary activist as ideal person in power. With introduction of political parties - competition between different types of elite rulers. Introduces notion of ideology - ideological vision of society. Emergence of the term ideology occurs in the renaissance and early modern period (1300-1750) Comes about due to changes in these times. Renaissance represents a break with the middle ages - brings with it changes to the social forces at play, and changes to the general outlook on the world.
