In the textbook they include the neanderthals and homo erectus. Some landmarks in hominid evolution: ~7 million years ago: earliest hominid ancestor (africa), most likely resembled chimpanzees. Found by a french team of scientists in 2001: ~4 million years ago. Upright posture was achieved in ancestral hominid species: ~2. 5 million years ago: early stone tools were developed by hominid ancestors. Some hominid species co existed in the same area at the same time. Difficult to determine which species first invented. Note: close to 20 hominid species have been identified (most were in australopithecus and homo genera) Australopithecus afarensis (lucy first hominid to walk, ~4 million years old: brain size of roughly 400cm3. Homo habilis (~2. 5 mililion years old: brain size roughly 600cm3. Note: brain size isn"t a direct correlation of how smart they are, just the capability or potential: ratio of brain size also important.
