Document Summary

In 1 second the sun produces enough energy to supply the earth with enough power to supply the entire civilization for almost 500k years. While we can"t see inside of an atom, our theoretical models can be used to successfully predict and manipulate their behaviour. The heat released by atoms provide us with a source of energy that has many practical applications (eg car engines, refrigerators, etc. ) Newton showed us that (nearly) all objects, whether on earth or in space, obey the same laws of gravity and motion. This allows us to fly airplanes, launch rockets and space satellites in orbit. Certain atoms decay overtime, releasing energy as their atomic nuclei break apart. This natural source of energy can be both extremely useful as well as extremely harmful. Chain reaction of nuclear fission release enormous amounts of energy. When he reaction is uncontrolled, you get a nuclear bomb. When the reaction is controlled, you get a nuclear power plant.
