Document Summary

Lecture 1: chapter 1 - a universe of life. In what ways could contact with extra-terrestrial life occur: how might communication with an eti be advantageous and disadvantageous to our civilization (e. g. , science, religion, society, politics, etc. ) Science in general has no clear evidence yet for life anywhere else in the universe. No concrete evidence to suggest life is elsewhere. We are searching for signs of life. To begin the search though, we are going to be looking for life as we know it. That does not mean carbon based life is the only form of life that can exist. The discussion of whether life exists elsewhere in the universe has been a topic of discussion for literally thousands of years. Macroscopic life does not exist anywhere in the solar system save for earth. Microbial life might exist in the solar system. The rst exotic planet was found in 1995 (mid 1990"s).
