NATS 1870 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Photon, Emission Spectrum
Document Summary
3 types of spectra are possible: continuous: smooth variation from one color to the next. A solid, liquid or gas that gets heated to the point of glowing - will emit light at all wavelengths. Stars (to the rst approximation), incandescent sources like lightbulbs, lava, glowing metal, etc: emission line (bright line): only speci c wavelengths are emitted. Low density gas that is heated will produce emission spectrum: absorption line (dark line): continuous spectrum with dark lines or gaps superimposed. Happens when source of continuous emission passed through a cooler gas. These 3 different physical situations for spectra are called kirchoff"s laws .
