Greek idea of color was that it was part of the object. This idea was changed by isaac newton; 1665 newton"s annus mirabulus or miracle year . Had just finished his studies; went back home, his 20"s most fruitful time of life for him, developed: His experiments at this time were not well received. Felt that there must be 7 colors because of the relationship between sounds & octave; also that colors in a light beam should be the same. White light through prism=red through to violet light; rainbow or spectrum . View prior to newton was that color was part of an object. When the light goes through prism, the prism stains the light. White light goes through spectrum of colors via one prism, goes through another prism and becomes white light again. 2nd prism re-assembles spectrum back into white light. Newton could conclude that white light was a composite of all the colors of the spectrum.
