NATS 1775 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Packet Switching, Internet Privacy, Computer Network
Document Summary
Studying history of internet shows us again how users shape technological systems and also allows us to explore many current and important issues of management and control such as internet privacy and cybercrime. Computers communicate with each other by using machine language standards such as. Messages are transmitted through packet-switching (see below), whereby information (e. g. a file) is broken up into smaller sections (digital packets) that contain a common set of headers that provide information about the packet"s final destination and contents. Since packets are labeled with a final destination address, they can be reassembled at receiving computer. While messages automatically routed, they are managed by systems" administrator who makes sure machinery is functioning. The thing that allows each bit or packet to go to the same location is that each packet has the same headers. With packet switching technology, each digital packet will travel a different route to go from computer one to computer two.
