How is science shaped by society, its usually how science shapes society but we are interested in studying the opposite. Einstein"s theory of relativity will be juxtaposed on another theory which was niels. Bohr theory of the atomic structure and quantum theory. Einstein grew up in a society dominated by machines. There was a long standing debate about whether light was a wave or a series of particles. Newton be- lieved it was a series of particles, but research after newton suggested it was a wave. waves have a strange property called constructive or deconstructive interfer- ence. Light waves that are opposite each other can cancel each other out, that"s why one gets rings because of destructive interference. If light is a wave, then it has to be a wave in something like sound is a wave in the air, water waves etc. Ether is the medium in which light travels, which is 300,000 km/s.
