NATS 1750 Lecture 16: Geological Resources
Document Summary
In canada mineral resources are an important part of our economy, there are many sources and type of resources. This lecture looks at the geology that is associated with various mineral, fossil fuel, and energy resources. The resources fall into 3 important categories: mineral (which are mined) - these can mined and are found in various deposits in different geological structures. These can be extracted through various mining techniques. Two major categories are: metallic, nonmetallic (non metallic won"t really be discussed here) Concentrated enough to be economic to mine. Metal must be readily extracted from the mineral. Ores are not uniformly distributed through earth"s crust. The concentration must be high enough to yield a profit. The amount of useful metal present is the ore grade. Different ores occur in different geologic settings. Sulfide minerals crystallize early and sink in magma. Form massive sulfide ores at the bottom of chamber. Hot fluid leaches metal ions out of rock near plutons.
