1942: the v2 rocket, a german wwii missile, became the 1st man-made object to breach. Earth"s (cid:271)ou(cid:374)dary (cid:894)i. e. , the karman line, which is 100 km above sea level). The kar(cid:373)a(cid:374) li(cid:374)e is the (cid:271)ou(cid:374)dary at (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h earth"s at(cid:373)osphere is too thi(cid:374) for air (cid:374)a(cid:448)igatio(cid:374). This also means that the air beyond this boundary is so empty that satellites can maintain stable orbits without requiring any fuel to combat air resistance. 1945: werner von braun, the german rocket scientist behind the v2, surrendered to the u. s. he later became one of the key architects of the american space program. 1946: v2 rockets were used by the u. s. military to take the photos from space. Over the next decade, american and soviet military used v2 rockets to conduct various experiments in space, including animal experiments. Soviets had more success with the dogs than the american did with the monkeys mostly because of technical problems.
