Superficial study of the movements and positions of the celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world. Pre-historic cultures left behind astronomical artifacts, egyptian monuments and stonehenge and early civilizations; babylonian, greek, chinese, indians, maya preformed methodical and systematically observations of the night sky. Pattern recognition is a humans" ability to recognize patterns is probably what separates us most from machines. We are programed to see patterns, while science uses numbers and probability to show confidence level in patterns.
