ESSAY ON ASTRONOMY IN EXAM
NATS 1740
LECTURE#2
TUES,JAN10/2016
NEWTON, EINSTEIN, BOHR, Galileo, Kepler are important names to remember.
Know when they lived
• Light second is a length measure which is equal to 300000km.
• So light travels 300000km in one second.
300000 = 3 x 105km = 3x 108m
5 because there are 5 zeroes in 300,000
8 because there are 3 more zeros because there are 1000 metres in 1 km.

Review of the Introduction:
• 1. Arcbeoastronomy is the way in which ancient people used or did astronomy.
o The experiment of archeoastronomy is based on observations for agriculture.
o There were temples, where through the architecture of that temple, they were
predicting various times in the year related to the place where the sunlight was
observed. Used rocks – when light would shine on it, it was the beginning of a
certain season.
• 2. Cosmology is the study of the universe as a WHOLE.
• 3. The use of telescopes marked the beginning of modern astronomy, and galileo was
the first person to use the horoscope in 1608. And Johannes keplr made the planetary
laws about movement of planets around sun.
o Kepler should always be paired with Galileo.
o Existence of two parents is what is needed for scientific theory, where you need
experiment and theory to exist and complement each other. (galileo and kepler)
o Role of experimentalist is to also predict things which are not known yet.
• 4. Definition of a scientific theory is it has two parts.
o It correctly describes a set of observations
o The theoretical model makes predictions which are challenges for
experimentalists and the experimentalists come up with new measurements to
verify those predictions 0

• 5. The two main scientific theories of the universe: (they are completely DIFFERENT
VIEW)
o 1. Quantum mechanics
▪ relates to micro universe
▪ explains everything smaller than small molecules – includes nuclear,
nucleus of atoms, particle physics, super strengths
▪ for big molecules, classical mechanics works.
o 2. General relativity
▪ relates to macro universe
▪ originates in einsteins 1916 general relativity, which was confirmed
experimentally in 1919.
• 6.Micro universe is anything smaller than a small molecule – the world of quantum
mechanics is micro universe.
• 7.A billionth of a billionth in powers of 10? →
o Billionth is 10-9
o billionth of billionth is 10-9 x 10-9 = 10-18
• 8. Km in a light minute is speed of light x 60 seconds. 3x108 x 60 = 18 x106
• 9. Three examples of international corporation
o sirn
o hubble telescope
o ISS – international space station
▪ Canada contributed the robot arm for the itnernationl space station
• 10. How to picture the universe.
o All those pictures and powers of weights are a good illustration
Eath’s oplete eolutio aoud the “u is 9k/seod.
• 39km/s x 60 x 60 = 140,000 km/h.
the bigger the things in the universe, the faster they move.
We are on a collision course with Andromeda which is 300 million light years away, and is
supposed to collide with us in 1.5 billion years.
In 1.5 billion years, sun will die and beome a bigger sun, and that will be the end of the earth.
OBSERVING THE MICRO UNIVERSE AT THE ATOMIC LEVEL PGS14-26:
1.Human observations:
• eyes are the best way to observe object
• MEMORIZE THE ELECTROMAGENTIC SPECTRUM – going from low energy to high energy
o All electromagnetic radiation are emitted by hot objects
o Wires with electricity, generate magnetic fields.
