Document Summary
Local astronomy, part 1: mapping the night sky. We will describe both qualitatively and quantitatively the changing appearance of the night (and day) sky over various time scales (daily and yearly). The celestial sphere will be introduced as an earth-centred sky- coordinates system for labelling all objects in the sky. Time keeping based on the motion of earth both its daily rotation and yearly revolution around the sun will also be introduced. Main topics: the celestial sphere coordinate system for the sky, daily patterns of motion in the sky, yearly patterns in motion the sky, astronomical time periods (day, year) S1. 2 celestial coordinates and motion in the sky. Important notes: make sure you view all of the interactive. Figures in the readings: you can omit all mathematical insight sections. Before setting out to solve the great mysteries of this universe, we need to be able to navigate it first, and understand the causes of the changing appearances of our sky.
