Nats 1700 unit lecture 9: can people be addicted to the internet: debating internet addiction. While the definition of addiction is heavily contested, the term generally refers to individuals who do not have control over what they take, use or do as an activity. Addictive patterns include excess usage (despite being aware of potential harm), withdrawal (often accompanied by feelings of anger, depression, tension); tolerance and adverse consequences (deteriorating school, work, personal relationships, health) The negative consequences can truly have an impact on someone and it all revolves around the use of this particular kind of use. Addictions can manifest themselves in physical and/or psychological symptoms. While internet addiction is considered an official disorder in countries like china (2008) and has been studied most in asian countries, north american researchers continue to debate whether such a condition actually exists. Other terms used include: problematic internet use (piu), internet dependency, dysfunctional internet use, compulsive or pathological internet use.
