It can take only a single episode of unprotected sex (i. e. not using a condom) with an infected partner for hiv to be passed on. However, hiv is not always passed on the first time. Hence, it"s never too late to start practicing safer sex. It is also never too late to get tested for the virus. False negative results during the window period. An infected person can transit hiv to others, without their hiv infection being detectable using an antibodies test.
