Doctors had very few tools to deal with infectious diseases, not many drugs were available, no vaccine to prevent diseases were available, doctors had very few ways to deal with viral, bacterial and other types of diseases. However, in 30 years or so, life expectancy went up. In 30 years (1900-28) life expectancy went up by 20%. 1960-2008 canada & usa life expectancy rose to 80 years old. In 40 years since 1960, size of the population was doubled from 3 billion to 6 billion.
