Mars has been part of popular culture in the search for extraterrestrial life since the 19th century. One of the key figures in promoting the early interest in life on mars was. Percival lowell who spent a great deal of time and money to observe what he thought was a network of canals on mars. Part of the problem with the search on mars is separating the mythology for the scientific study. Mars as an abode of extraterrestrials has been part of our popular culture since the early twentieth century. Works like war of the worlds" and edgar rice burroughs. Barsoom" have strongly influenced the public perception of mars. Very noticeable about mars it its surface colour. The red colour of the surface is a result of high levels of iron oxides (rust) in the surface material. Mars does have certain characteristics observable with even early telescopes that would have brought interest due to similarities with earth.
