MODR 1730 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Relativism
Document Summary
Morality (values and principles) and ethics (the study and questions) is the basis of this course. The study of them is confined to philosophy. ex. reasons to keep a promise. Moral discussion: discussing the rights and wrongs (of why your friend may have cancelled plans) You must exchange reasons to discover rights and wrongs. Everything is subjective: based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes or opinions. Everything is an opinion is a radical claim. If you believe this claim, you have to provide reasons why it is true. (this is common sense) Although it looks like such a good foundation for tolerance, it could either represent oppression. ex. archery. Theres a point where the objective of archery is lost. The skill of hand eye coordination is what archery is. Your opinions are a function of your biography because of your formative (developmental) experiences in your lifetime.
