Modes of Reasoning
Exam Essay Question: Tar Sands, Alberla
Abortion
• Termination of pregnancy
• Legal in Canada
• VERY CONTROVERSAL
• “Pro-choice” and “Pro-life” are satisfactory for the debate. Not concrete/explanatory –
need to address the exceptions
Argument 1: Pro-life
• Many view human life as sacred from conception, however are there exceptions?
→ What bout sexual assault, incest, risk of mother’s health?
→ Is ALL life sacred? (abortion clinic employees)
• Lots of religious people adopt this views. Consistency
Ex) Master bastion “wrong” for same reasons. Wasting your seeds” Are they crimes?
• Pro-life, but are you okay with capital punishment?
- it is okay to abort if you are assaulted or incest → so are you really pro-life?
Argument 2: Pro-Choice
• Feminist Argument: A woman has a right to do what she wants with her body
• Doesn’t mean that she WILL, just means that she has the choice
• What about if abortion is used as a form of contraception? (Instead of birth control etc.)
• What is abortion is used as a means to ensure one only gives birth to males? (ex. China)
→ In other words…are there restrictions on the freedom? In these hypothetical
cases, it was still woman’s choice
• Pro-choice, but you can not have it after a certain trimester → so do you really have a
choice?
** You cannot really choose because three are so many arguments with in it
➢ The labels “pro-choice” and “pro-life” are bifurcations. Okay in a political sense (to
identify with) but otherwise no, because doesn’t capture the reasons for the arguments
➢ Abortion has been happening for a long time – the only difference is the means of
abortion
(Ex. Vigorous exercise, etc to hopefully induce miscarriage
➢ Women who don’t see a problem with abortions will still seek them under-the-radar

Abortion has been happening for a long time the only difference is the means of abortion (ex. Women who don"t see a problem with abortions will still seek them under-the-radar. Might lead to infection and cant seek help because you"d be caught. Why/why not: a lot of arguments argue that it is a potential problem when conceived, others say when the foetus can survive on it"s own outside the womb. The answer depends on when you consider potential person to begin.
