Why does china want to revive the silk road? the inquiry (bbc, 2017) Section one of the podcast which was presented by ruth alexander describes the history of the silk road and introduces the audience to the ancient traditions. While this road did transport silk, it was not as much about trade as it was a cultural artery trafficking ideas, technology, and religion across all of eurasia. Alexander next discusses the fact that this road is a much more modern concept having operated until the 1500s. She concludes the silk road is more of a brand that china has devised and is relying on to build healthier relationships with their neighbors, using it to reminisce about their peaceful past with other countries. Section two describes how the silk road would operate as a grand transnational development strategy. It requires china funding and building infrastructure across all of eurasia with the aim of creating an economic trading hub.
