John labatt blows in and out of the windy city. A way to define business failure: the cessation of a business venture because it has not met the minimum threshold for economic viability as stipulated by the entrepreneur. Most academics agree that the symptoms of a failing business include market share erosion, persistent low or negative profitability, shrinking critical resources, or the loss of legitimacy. Biographers of canadian entrepreneurs stress the importance of intuition, vigour, persistence, thrift, creativity, honesty, loyalty, innovation, and even greed as key characteristics for success in business. Canada"s historical entrepreneurs all shared a capacity for risk-taking. These entrepreneurs were often pushed"" by maturing markets and increased competition at home, and pulled"" by the relatively regulator- friendly, cash-strapped, and technologically deficient markets abroad. The fact that labatt headed south during the 1890"s suggests a degree of risk- taking, setting him apart from other canadian brewers.
