Globalization has led to increases in migration and developments in communication technologies that allow for transnational flows of ideas, languages, and asymmetries, creating complex and creative mixtures of languages. Swedish and norwegian are labeled as two separate languages though they are very similar. Spoken hindu and urdu are similar, but because of their association with different nation-states (india and pakistan) they are referred to as separate languages. Serbio-croatian was considered a single language until serbia and croatia became independent countries. Point: considerations of politics, history, ethnic identity, culture, and indigenous rights take precedence over technical linguistic considerations. The term connotes a linguistic repertoire that is associated, culture- internally, with particular social practices and with persons who engage in such practices: ex. polite language, geek speak, girl talk. Differences of register competence are often linked to asymmetries of power, socioeconomic class, and position within hierarchies .
