Linguistics : the study of human language systems. Language : a representational system used to express meaning or thought. Variable across groups of speakers and sujbject to change over-> other countries. Goal : competence, refers to a speaker s knowledgeof language. No type of complexe like humans bc every species has a language. Symbols/sounds are a form of language put together sign language ; written language written languages are always secondary to speaking or sign language astoris-> the following sentence does not make sense, could not be used as an english sentence. Grammar : deterniner, noun -> different in other languages (igbo) nd. The dog is large not inside same phrase than the large dog. Rules reflect systematics generalizations about actual usage, represent knowledge that is acquired without over instructions. Prescriptive grammar ; attempts to limit variation, change by establishing for how people should speak.
