Document Summary

Phonetics: speech production and the sounds of english (lesson 1 notes) Speech and written language are two different things but both can transmit language. Phonology: is the study of how sounds are organized and used in natural languages. Then it takes place by an air stream from the lungs. It involves 3 processes: initiation, phonation, and articulation. Moment when the air is expelled from the lungs. When the glottis can is closed, no air can pass. Narrow glottis opening makes vocal folds vibrate= voiced sounds . Wide open glottis(normal breathing), vibration of vocal folds is reduced= voiceless sounds . Articulation: modifies sound to generate speech sounds. Speech sounds are distinguished by the way they"re articulated. Vowel: the airstream flows out (relatively) freely, without a major obstacle in the vocal tract. A vowel is any sound with no audible noise produced by constriction in the vocal tract.
