Definitions that are used in field of aging: Geriatrics: branch of medicine dealing with the disease of aging, elderly are likely to often get chronic disease such as osteoporosis and so on, elderly is often mistreated, misdiagnosed, they have very complex problems. If they are not treated properly it leads to dependence (which they are afraid of: it is a problem bc we do not have enough geriatrics. It has an imagery problem that needs to be fixed. Institutional ageism: we devalue older people and we place little value for people who work with them: it takes long time to become geriatric doctor (10yrs). They do not get paid much as much as other doctors bc in. Ontario we pay by fee for service (not by patient), it is a protocol and every service doctor provided they pay them based on that protocol. More people they see more money they get, you get payed by visit.
