Document Summary

Lecture 2, cellular components of the nervous system. Localization of function is when certain parts of a brain lobe do certain tasks. Occipital lobe: vision (good example of localization of function) Temporal lobe: deals with several things including speech, taste, hearing. Parietal lobe: spatial sensing, where are you in relation to other objects. Frontal lobe: movement, planning, reasoning, higher order function : this is one of the earliest areas hit by dementia. 2 major cell types: nerve cells: (neurons, satellite cells: (neuroglia) there are more glia than there are neurons. They support the neurons and do the house keeping functions for the neurons such as transporting nutrition and waste. We have around 100 billion neurons, and they make 100 trillion connections with one another. Neurons (have 4 main regions) (they are excitable: dendrites, cell body, axon, presynaptic boutons: organelles lled with chemicals at the end of an axon.
