KINE 3012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Tidal Volume, Respiratory Minute Volume, Mount Everest
Document Summary
Two types of ventilation: moving air in and out of the lung, ventilation is a rate, usually expressed per minute. Minute ventilation = tidal volume (ml/min) * respiratory rate (breaths/min) The dot on top of the minute ventilation (ve) means that it is a rate. If there is no dot, then it is volume. Tidal volume is around 500ml per breath, with 12 breaths per minutes: this gives you 6000ml per minute, or 8640 litres per day. You breathe in 500 ml of fresh air, but only 350 of that fresh air goes into the alveoli, because the 150 ml of old air in the lungs goes back down into the alveoli. To account for dead space use va, which is the total amount of air that actually gets to the alveoli for usage: va = (vt-vd) * frequency of breaths. Vt is tidal volume, and vd is dead space.
