Has 5 functions: move o2 into the body, move co2 out of the body, regulate the ph of the body (using the kidneys). This is pretty much the acidity of the body. Secondary messengers: their ways for one area of the body to communicate with another. Their produced in one part of the body, then they respond in another part. The spongy coating thats found around the lungs provides elasticity, and protection, because the sacs that are under that layer are very delicate and fragile. Respiratory system starts at the mouth and the nose, and they meet at the tongue. In the conducting zone, there is no gas exchange. It is just a major passageway for air from the outside to the inside: gas exchange only takes place in the alveoli. The airway is not solid in the back, only in the front.
