KINE 2475 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Antithyroid Agent, Thyrotropin Receptor, Atrial Fibrillation
Document Summary
Most common cause of hypothyroidism in america. Autoantibodies include: tg antibody, tpo antibody, tsh receptor blocking antibody. Occurs to women & also in daughters in an autosomal dominant type transmission. Usually has high titers of anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-tpo) antibodies. Common causes: hasimoto"s thyroiditis or i131-induced hypothyroidism after treatment for. Patients often present w/some or all: fatigue, cold, intolerance, weight gain, constipation, hair loss, apathy. Riedel thyroiditis is chronic inflammation characterized by dense fibrosis that replaces normal thyroid parenchyma. Hashimoto"s results in multinodular, asymmetric goiter- abnormal enlargement of gland, more cellular dense (less colloid inside) Thyroiditis causes slow & chronic cell damage, it could caused stored thyroid to lead out increasing hormone levels in blood. Theoretical benefits of treatment include prevention of osteoporosis and subsequent bone fractures & prevention of atrial fibrillation. Therapy is either anti-thyroid drugs or ablation with either surgery or iodine.
