We add variables to make the experiments more real world like: we do this by adding independent variables, adding dependent variables. Since the y axis says weight change we know that it is pre test post test design because to know the weight change, you have to know what they must have been before hand. If you want to add another level to the independent variable for the experiment with the weight loss: you can add another group, a group that bikes 15 miles. Adding independent variables: studies with 2 or more independent variables are referred to as factorial designs. You say it depends on things like if you have an exam in the morning then you say no. If the other person is paying you say yes. So an interaction is a fancy is saying it depends : this is the main reason we do complex experiments.
