KINE 1020 Lecture Notes - Lecture 22: Stress Fracture, Female Athlete Triad, Oligomenorrhea
Document Summary
Female athlete triad: those women who have an absent menstrual cycle have a lower bone density. Female athlete triad factors: low energy availability: causes your body to literally end up eating itself, amenorrhea: this is a stop of the menstrual cycle, osteoporosis: loss of bone density. Menstural cycle: eumenorrhea: normal menstrual cycle every 24-23 days, oligomenorrhea: between 35 days and 90 days, this is common for most elite athletes, amenorrhea: no menses for at least 90 days. Bone regulation has 2 main cells: osteoclasts: eat away the bone, osteoblasts: build the bone, if this process is the same you will stay with the same amount of bone. The elite athlete may be eating more than you, but relative to how much they exercise it is not enough. Importance of estrogen: when you exercise your bone will sense the micro strains on it, if you have a lack of estrogen, this signal that tells your body to build bone is gone.
