Lack of movement towards comprehensive legislation: trudeau supports the idea of inclusive of all the disabled but has stalled on his actions. Impairment - difference in physical functioning: disability - inability to take part in society bc of social and environmental barriers. Societal responsibilities to address the barriers to that those can participate on an equal level. Impairment + societal barriers: race and gender are social constructions. Shifts from a personal issue to how society reacts to it. Consequences of medical model: best way to deal with diagnosis is a hospital. If they do(cid:374)"t get (cid:271)etter the(cid:374) they stay at the hospital = a(cid:271)use: woman w/ down syndrome suffered abuse at her provided institution. Lack of government responsibility: bc framed as personal issue, only responsible for society as a whole.
