Stated that our interaction w/ society is between "history" and "biography: history - positions in society and resources that we have access to o. Empowers appreciation of social location has on personal choices: determines privileges. Private troubles (personal issues) and public issues (consequences from the positions that we hold in society i. e. social problems: unemployment is an occurrence that ties the two issues together. Losing job because position is not as important in grand scheme of things - public. Collecting empirical data: drawing conclusions based on experiences or observations. Agency - freedom individuals have to choose and act. Choices are constrained by positions: amount of access to number of resources. Social environment; persistent patterns of relationships and social networks. Nested within institutions are groups, subgroups and statuses that we occupy.
