Decision making (first step to choose the first choice) Structured problem requires programmed decision based on a known rule, formula or procedure. Unstructured problem requires non-programmed decision based on individual knowledge and expertise. Semistructured problem requires combination of both types of decision. Decision made using a rule, procedure, or quantitative method. Easy to computerize using traditional information systems. Decision that deals with unusual or exceptional situations. Provide routine information to managers in the functional areas (marketing, etc: mis inputs: Comes from transaction processing system (day to day activities, ex. cash register at a grocery store) External databases: mis outputs various reports. Mis outputs: most common type of report is scheduled report typically weekly based, is produced periodically. Key-indicator report a summary of previous day critical activities. Demand report is developed at a person"s request. Exception report is automatically produced when a situation is unusual (ex. black out, fire, etc)
