Document Summary

The child reader from 1865 is different from the child reader today. Children are taught using books, how to behave. Alice is not a real girl but she represents a girl (victorian middle class child). Our reading of alice in 21st century is based upon the films we have seen, the other interpretations we have seen. The narrative in alice is created in such a way that alice talks to herself (audience) to share her feelings. We have an idea of what a child is. What might be appropriate for a child in 1865 may not be appropriate in 2013. The language changes with time, so alice"s language (1865) may be distant to us compared to harriet the spy (written in 1960s). Children read books about other places that are not real (fantasy). These books surely delight us, but they also tell us something as readers.
