Document Summary

The furies are described as truly grotesque creatures by pythia, the priestess of apollo. She states how they were a hideous sight, not even women more like gorgons but worse(line 48-49). She is basically saying how they are worse than another type of hideous beast. She describes them as having no wings, dark, dank, and disgusting. Along with a foul stench, pus filled eyes, and wearing clothes not fit for human sight(line 52-55). These lines describing the furies showcases what vengeance can and will probably do to someone. Apollo and the furies essentially have a agonistic relationship because of their opposing views of justice which puts them against each other. This is evident when the furies question apollo"s sense of justice because he is protecting the mother killer (line 149-154). Along with them stating: these new gods, this is how they behave, their power exceeds the bounds of justice (line 162-163).
