Ancient Athenian
-in the archaic pem riod there was constant civil war
-City is more likely to fall in internal crisis
-everybody in society must take a side when there was a fight brewing
-scholars argue this reduce conflict as the involvement of people lessened the
extremes
-hubris: Hubris is excessive pride and forgetting your place in the steam of things (or
"overweening" pride), and is often called "the pride that comes before the fall." It had
serious consequences in Greek tragedy and law.

-if you were dishonourable no one can come take your side, society puts there back
towards you. “political coodies", none want s to be associated with them <— law of
hubris
-hubris implies tyranny - a tyrant can not follow or accept the rule of law, basically
someone who thinks they're to good for the law
-hubris- placing the good of yourself over the good of society - piety knowing al the
benefits u have are the consequence of something that is bigger than you
-against the law in-slave another athenian, it was ok to in-slave anyone else
-139 demes (towns) —> 10 tribes —> 1 council boule
-every athenian citizen was allowed to be in the assembly ECCLESIA
-Heliaia (tutorial) - drawn randomly from the courts- lowest government official
-every decision was made in assembly with big speeches
-no formal rules in regulating disputes
-the only way to keep people in line is to take them to court and sue them
-stases : you must take sides during blood feuds - if you don't you have no courage
-revenge & rivalry
