Document Summary
Vengeance is the impulse to retaliate when wrong is done. The strengths of vengeance is satisfaction, matching like with like, giving what"s wrong to the wrongdoer, equal crime. Forgiveness is reaching for a response far from vengeance. Victims should not seek revenge and become a new victimizer but instead should forgive the offender and end the cycle of offence. The strength of forgiveness is that it helps you heal (moving on and letting go) connecting the victim and perpetrator. Reparations is an alternative to vengeance & forgiveness. The goal is to fix the root cause of the problem and prevent it from occurring again. For example, political changes, dismantling military, public statements of apology, compensation (cash), memorials, may be truth commission. Tell the entire truth; both parties telling their feelings, interpretations, etc. Not to forget and learn from the event; Challenges: public apologies may not be accepted, that had to be accepted.
