Romans assimilated diverse cultures in diverse locations. Two forms of totalitarian - that results from people in the old guard oppression of lower people, helped sustain old rome - rise of new people (barbarians) becomes power seeking and oppresses the old people. (ie: christianity) - for the rst 300 years, was an outsider religion in rome. Emperor becomes christian, they turn on themselves and try to be the most pure. Problem with roman empire: how to share privilege, how to share power, make everyone feel bene ted. How to establish an authority that includes everyone.
