Introduction: greek and roman culture, mythology and literature. Mythos also means verbal communication, speech, story, and plot. The polysemantic essence of the myth: cognitive, emotional, psychological, didactic. For a historian, periodization (grouping together of chronological sequences and assigning each one a label) is a necessary evil; it provides a convenient way of understanding history and particularly characteristics of the specific period. Polytheism: belief in many gods in ancient greece and rome. Heinrich schliemann, excavator of troy and mycenae. Sir arthur evans, discoverer of a huge complex of palaces at knossos, on the island of crete: very rich area, lots of gold and riches. 1900: earliest evidence of early greek civilization and culture. Early greek history: problems of reconstructing greek history are similar to those observed in ancient jewish history, texts written at the time are far removed from the actual events, they were not meant to be reported historical facts.
