HUMA 1105 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Euripides, Diadem, Aegeus
Document Summary
Medea is the princess of colchis (a barbarian), wife of jason, and has two children. Medea"s husband jason has left medea for the daughter of the ruler of creon (the place of which the story takes place) Medea"s nurse is worried that she may do something awful. Medea tells her children that she hates them and their father, and constantly wished death upon herself. She prays to themis (titaness of good counsel/goddess of promises) that her husband"s life will be shattered. The nurse says medea is like a lioness guarding her cubs *irony* Medea tells the women of corinth that all women are the most unfortunate creatures (because they must chose a master (which are usually bad), and to not chose one is even worse, women are seen as property. No woman can say no to marriage, she must re-invent herself to care for her husband)
