In general, the techies did very well on forbes 400 list in 1999. There were 71 moguls on the list who derived their fortunes from technology and software. It is the techies, the masters of the new globe girdling cyber magic, who have set the tone for. American capitalism at the dawn of the new millennium. As others have suggested, the techies have raised the tone of the super-rich from the lurid and destructive image of the junk bond dealers who came to prominence in the 1980s. The techies, with bill gates as their point man, have done more than anyone else to give american capitalism its hopeful, future-oriented face. To some extent though, this new face on american capitalism has resulted from a conjuring trick no less difficult to contrive than the cyber universe itself. We are being encouraged to feel warm and cuddly about the new nerdy billionaires. Bill gates in his oversized sweater is just so huggable.
