HREQ 1800 Lecture 10: Lecture 10- Conflict Theory
Document Summary
Four main assumptions of con ict theory: con ict versus consensus: Those who talk about interpretive methods focus on how we interpret reality (symbols, language) that lead to labelling and stigmatization. Consensus theory tends to be more conservative (economists talk about natural state of equilibrium within society, social scientist talk about equilibrium of society that is formed in terms of elements of society working towards a state of stability). Crimes serves the function of telling us what is unacceptable behaviour. It has a function in society therefore, it is not a bad thing (it reminds us of our own morality). Even though crime is a disruptive force of society, it works toward stabilizing society. Consensus theories would focus on that, function of roles in society. When people ful ll their roles in a normative way. Normativity- there is a morality out there, when we come together as a society, we de ne ourselves by what we believe in.
