Interpretive approach, often referred to as labelling theory. The idea of labelling an o ender is very important to how criminals are processed and how we as a society understand youth as a problem. Labelling theory can be applied to racialization, but youth has very unique role in society (neither adults nor children). Long tradition in our society as seeing youth as a problem. Youth are human beings, but on the other hand they are symbolic of something. We live in society thats dominated by adult cultural norms. Youth are not quite adults and we struggle to gure out what they are. Argues that we need to take symbolic elements of how we represent people. People are symbolic of more than they often seem. Interpretation or de nition rather than mere reaction (we are constantly interpreting the action of others): response based on meaning, use of symbols. Interpretation between stimulus and response (between stimulus and response is interpretation)
