HIST 3850 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: O. J. Simpson, Homicide, High Standard Manufacturing Company
Document Summary
September 7: introduction to the history of the law and the justice system. In bench trials, the judge makes the decision - there isn"t a jury. This course focusses on both canada and the united states, but nowhere else. To study homicide, we have to understand the victims and their histories. We also have to understand the time and the context in which cases occur, because the law is organic. Rather than being static, it evolves over time, due to many things. Homicide is the killing of a human being by another individual. All societies regulate homicide, but they have defined or regulated it differently over time. For example, we imprison people, whereas in some societies, the relatives of homicide victims sometimes seek revenge or compensation. The action and the mind are both guilty: felony murder. Homicide without intent, during a felony: manslaughter.
