Tutorial: class tensions, race, class and gender is socially constructed, just as serial killers are socially constructed- understanding motives and why they merge is because of a complex social issue. Taking something that is already feared in society, and the press utilizes that fear to sell newspapers and construct cultural and social identities. The press has a huge part in who and what we think of serial killers: prostitutes in the jack the ripper case were known as the lowest in society. Women using sin to corrupt white, middle-class family men. The media began to realize that white, middle-class men were being led into a narrow path from society. It is harder to violate a white man"s due process rights. It is easier to round up and question deviants because they are more vulnerable: the press constructs this image of the serial killer as an abnormal deviant.
