Lecture: the abolition of capital punishment in canada: abolished in 1976, responsibility of the federal government. Murder; attempted murder; rape; reason; carnal knowledge of a girl under 10 years: government was hesitant to execute women, rape was no longer a capital crime in the 1980s. Wilbert coffin 1915-1956: prospector and woodsman in gasp , quebec, june 1953: three wealthy pennsylvania sportsmen arrive to hunt bear, eugene lindsay, richard lindsay (son 17 years), and frederick claar (20, all 3 disappear in the forest. The men asked him to check in on them later in the week, and coffin did, but did not find them: victims were rich, well-connected americans, became a serious political problem when this case went public. Decline in capital punishment 1951-65: 1951-57: 55 of 90 (61%, 1957-63: 14 of 66 (21%, 963-1965: 0 of 4 (0%, criminal code amendments ( capital and non-capital murder, execution only if 18 years and older, right of appeal.
