Science and technology is front and center in modern criminal justice system. Dna has revolutionized the way things are investigated. When such scientific measures are not taken, society becomes skeptical (of the court, lawyers, police: maybe the wrong person was caught, or maybe something is being hidden from society?) Other techniques that pre-date that would be laughable in the courts today. However, there are other types that were used 100-200 years ago, and are continued to be used today. During the 18th century, there could be murder scenes filled with blood, but there was no technology available to analyze it. The idea of different blood types was not yet discovered.
